Toots and the Maytals

Toots and the Maytals never achieved the worldwide fame of Bob Marley or Jimmy Cliff, despite being one of the major forerunners of ska and reggae music since forming in 1963 and notching up a record-breaking 31 number-one hits in their native Jamaica. That's not to say the group hasn't moved with the times; in recent years they've been savvy enough to win new fans by collaborating with the Roots, Shaggy, Willie Nelson, and they even covered Radiohead, though "54-46 (That’s My Number)" is still their best song. [Wrong—their best song is "Funky Kingston." -Ed.]
