H.P. Lovecraft Double Feature
Filmmakers have stumbled for years trying to adapt the works of cosmic horror author H.P. Lovecraft to the big screen. Interestingly, these two shoestring-budget indie chillers come closer to capturing the all-encompassing dread of Lovecraft’s dark prose than decades of bigger-budgeted efforts. The silent featurette The Call of Cthulhu chronicles an ages-old text that could be a portal to an otherworld of universe-devouring entities, while The Whisperer in Darkness follows a young professor through a township overrun by aliens. Both sport oodles of atmosphere—rendered in rich black and white.
